Magic Spring & Summer 2017 Release Roundup
Wizards has been on an upswing in their release of supplemental sets and products since mid-2016, and 2017 is looking no different! Along with the four yearly Standard expansions, this Spring and Summer are packed with other goodies for all types of Magic players. Below we’ll check out what you can expect and the price tag associated with each of the new releases coming up, as well as their release dates so you can contact your local game store for pre-orders!
Modern Masters 2017
Returning for it’s third installment in the series is the reprint set Modern Masters 2017. Previous Modern Masters sets have given players much needed reprints of competitive staples focused at providing more copies of high-demand, out-of-print cards that make playing the Modern format inch further and further out of reach for many players. The last two Modern Masters sets had an incremental cap on how far into Magic from 8th Edition that the sets selection could go, leaving out Innistrad and Zendikar block. This time both Innistrad and Zendikar cards will be present, opening speculation about a plethora of potential cards from these high-impact blocks that have shaped and defined Modern. Cards such as Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage and the five Zendikar fetchlands are a few of the more desired cards among those speculated for inclusion.
The expansion will release on March 17th, followed by it’s Magic Online release on March 23rd. The MSRP for booster packs of the product is set to be $9.99. Because it is a specialized release it will not be be released to big box retailers, but only your local game store, which may choose to sell at an increased rate.
Duel Deck: Mind vs Might
Very little is known about this Spring’s Duel Deck, yet, other than a single blurb on it’s product page.
DD:MvM will release on March 31st, 2017. MSRP for the Duel Deck is $24.99.
Rise Among the Worthy
The next Standard-legal expansion takes us to the new plane of Amonkhet. Described as a “Desert oasis that forges warriors”, the imagery revealed so far show it to be inspired by ancient Egypt and it’s mythology, where many players expect to see the God creature type return. The Kaladesh & Aether Revolt story came to a close this week and last, where several clues were dropped involving the well-known Planeswalker villain Nicol Bolas and a new grand scheme set in motion by his minion, Planeswalker Tezzeret, during events on Kaladesh. These stories provided a bridge between Kaladesh and Amonkhet, setting the stage for an epic adventure into the lair of one of the biggest threats in the multiverse. While we are still in the dark about card mechanics or any other details, everything we know so far lends to excitement that this will be another home run world design.
Pre-release events for Amonkhet will fire off the weekend of April 22nd-23rd, with the street release date following on May 3rd. MSRP for booster packs product is the Standard $3.99.
Now having our 3rd Anthology set, preceded by the Duel Deck and Planechase Anthologies, we are getting all five of the original Commander pre-constructed decks released in 2012. You’ll get complete versions of the decks helmed by Kaalia of the Vast, Riku of Two Reflections, Zeedru the Greathearted, The Mimeoplasm and Ghave, Guru of Spores. These contain many format staples and desirable cards for the Commander format. Currently trying to find any of these sealed from their original print run in 2012 leads players to finding listings at $150-200 *each*. For Commander players this will prove to be an invaluable release!
This Anthology box set releases on June 9, 2017 with an MSRP of $169.99. These releases tend to be semi-limited, so pre-order with your local game store ASAP!
Archenemy: Nicol Bolas
This return to Archenemy marks our first time seeing a new product for the series since the original set of Archenemy decks released in 2012. Amonkhet is all about the evil Arch-nemesis of our Planeswalker heroes: Nicol Bolas, and the scheming Elder Dragon is the perfect focus of a long-anticipated new series of Archenemy decks. In Archenemy, where three players try to take down one player using a combination of 4 decks provided, while the Archenemy gets a second deck of malicious Schemes that make the fight truly epic. Each deck will contain reprints of past cards to round out the decks (but no new card content), giving Wizards another opportunity to print cards in demand in other formats like Commander and even Modern or Legacy. We’ll also be getting foil Planeswalkers in each deck with new alternative art from their original printings, though which Planeswalkers or versions of them is yet to be seen.
This set will release June 16th, 2017 with an MSRP of $59.99.
Hour of Devastation
Unleash your Endgame
The next Standard-legal set after Amonkhet is the evolution of that expansion’s story and card mechanics, Hour of Devastation. Nothing is known about this set yet, other than that it will conclude the conflict being set up on Amonkhet between Nicol Bolas and The Gatewatch. More cynical members of the Magic community are hoping the Planeswalker heroes might be dealt an entire humble pie after their continuous victories on Zendikar, Innistrad and now Kaladesh. Whatever happens, a name like Hour of Devastation doesn’t bode well for Magic’s antagonists.
This Summer expansion’s prerelease events are July 8-9, 2017, then releasing world-wide July 14th, 2017. MSRP is the standard $3.99 for booster products.
