Magic: MMORPG Announced & MTG Duels Ending
The MMORPG is part of the Magic Digital Next initiative at Wizards of the Coast, which is focused on entering new areas of digital gaming with Magic. The MMORPG will be created by Cryptic Sutdios, which is known for their previous games such as City of Heroes and Neverwinter Online.
We have also partnered with Cryptic Studios—creators of games like City of Heroes and Neverwinter—to produce a Magic: The Gathering massively multiplayer online game. The partnership is new, so we can’t tell you when you’ll be able to start roaming the Multiverse, but that day is coming! You can read a bit more about it here. We’re also discussing similar partnerships with other digital studios and game creators and hope to have more news on those in the near future.
While the announcement of an MMORPG is exciting, players currently invested in the most recent Magic video game – Magic Duels – are less excited. It turns out that Amonkhet will be the last update for Magic Duels and that the upcoming July 2017 expansion, Hour of Devastation, won’t be making it’s way to Duels. Rather, we now know that support for Duels will be ending as we move into the 25th Anniversary of Magic and development is focused on new projects.
These are all exciting beginnings, but with new beginning comes one ending. In order to make room for the next generation of Magic digital products, Amonkhet will be the last new content update for MagicDuels. Hour of Devastation will not be released on the platform.
Duels will still be available for download and playable, including all of the content from Magic Origins, Battle For Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch, Shadows Over Innistrad, Eldritch Moon, Kaladesh, Aether Revolt and Amonkhet. More information about the next stage of Magic Digital Next (or “MDN”) is slated to appear at HASCON in September!
