Magic: Iconic Masters and HASCON Announced
The official Magic: the Gathering website announced a new event today, as well as a new supplemental set!
Today’s announcements kicked off with Wizards of the Coast introducing HASCON – Hasbro’s first convention – and it will be taking place at Providence, Rhode Island the weekend of September 8-10th. If you were previously unaware, Hasbro is the parent company of Wizards of the Coast!
Special events are to take place at HASCON, particularly surrounding the kickoff of Magic’s 25th Anniversary celebrations which will include new products and events starting at the later half of 2017 and going on through 2018.
As for the new Iconic Masters supplemental set? Wizards had this to say about it’s presence at HASCON.
Iconic Masters offers players a tour through some of the most iconic cards in Magic history. Featuring new artwork on many cards, the set brings an array of Angels, Sphinxes, Demons, Dragons, and Hydras alongside some of our favorite and most memorable spells over the game’s entire history. Iconic Masters is truly a celebration of Magic‘s 25 years. Every box contains 24 booster packs of 15 cards each, including one premium card in every pack—perfect for drafting with your friends.
Iconic Masters, which is being released as part of Magic‘s 25th Anniversary celebration, does not actually release until November 17, but that’s what makes the event at HASCON so special. Back when Magic was still young, Prereleases used to be experiences that players entered into without knowing a single card in the set. Previews didn’t exist, and Prerelease participants were experiencing the cards for the first time.
If you intend to attend the festivities at HASCON, you get to play with Iconic Masters nearly two months before anyone else! Additionally, you may have heard that the Commander product for 2017 was revealed the other day and set to release in August instead of it’s usual November slot. Well, it appears that Commander 2017 was moved up in order to release the Iconic Masters set in the November slot in time for the holidays. Despite the mention of Angels, Sphinxes, Demons, Dragons and Hydras (the five iconic creatures of White, Blue, Black, Red and Green), anything else about Iconic Masters appears to be rather vague. You’ll also see a lot of the next set, Ixalan, which will have it’s prerelease events the weekend after HASCON. Wizards further said we can expect more about Ixalan come Announcement Day in June.
