Magic: More Commander 2017 To Be Printed
Many players have been reporting that their local game stores received a relatively limited amount of the new Commander 2017 decks that were released last week. As a result, some have taken to Magic Lead Designer Mark Rosewater’s Q&A Blog to ask if players can expect further supply of these decks.
Fortunately, the answer is that yes, we will see more product printed and distributed!
mikluemp asked: Will there be more of c17 printed? My lgs and local walmart were sold out of the dragon deck on release day.
Mark Rosewater: Yes, we are reprinting Commander 2017.
This is good news, especially after a shortage of supply for Commander 2016 decks last year leading to scalpers buying up product to mark up on the secondary market by absurd amounts. Both 2016 and 2017’s official Commander deck releases have contained an extraordinary amount of in-demand cards for the format, and even new ones like Teferi’s Protection that are powerful enough to demand a price on the secondary market nearly equal to the $34.95 MSRP of the decks themselves.
As the format continues to grow in popularity, game stores are forced to mark up their own product even if only slightly to deter potential scalpers while retaining product for their customers. Another wave of Commander 2017 products will hopefully lower the near immediate jump beyond MSRP of this year’s decks, while also lowering the coast of some of the more popular single cards within them found on the secondary market.
