Magic: Amonkhet Info Dump
Official previews for Amonkhet begin next Monday, April 6th, but this week began with as bang as we were teased with early information all about the set and it’s various promotional cards. Magic’s official website posted an article detailing some new mechanics from the expansion set, as well as what specific promo cards you can expect to win or receive for attending the events surrounding Amonkhet’s release!
For the first time ever, Magic is including punch cards in their packs that let you create the various counters and makers you’ll need when playing the expanion set’s cards.
Included on the punch cards are markers for Exerted, Embalmed, -1/-1 Counters and Brick Counters. We’ll discuss the details of the these markers later in this news post, but for now take a look at what you’ll receive in your booster packs, below!
All of the promotional cards for the buy-a-box program, Draft Weekend and Game Day have been announced, as well! Revealed are returning and new mechanics including Cycling and the aforementioned Exert, Emblam and Brick counter mechanics.
Cycling is an age old and popular mechanic originally found in Urza’s Saga, which has come back off and on throughout the game’s history. The buy-a-box promo, Archfiend of Ifnir, showcases an example of discard potentially being an advantage, which makes sense alongside the recent Shadows Over Innistrad block which will share the Standard format with Amonkhet.
Exert is a triggered ability one can use when attacking with a creature to cause a bonus or greater effect, but leaving the creature unable to untap during your next untap step.
Embalm is a cost which can be paid when a creature with the ability is in your graveyard, letting you exile that creature and create a White Zombie creature token that is a copy of the Embalmed creature.
Brick counters have only been revealed on one card so far, being the Oracle’s Vault pictured below. Given that they appear on the punch out card, it’s a good guess that the theme of building the monuments and places of worship around Amonkhet will be prominent in the set.
But That’s Not All!
Also featured in the official info dump article were previews of the Amonkhet Game Day Champion playmat, several commons being reprinted with the Amonkhet flavor, and the updated Welcome Decks to be given out to players at the Open House event on April 15th. Remember that if you bring a friend or new player to Open House to teach them how to play Magic, or new players, you could receive a free full art foil land from Amonkhet!
