Indie Game Spotlight : Underhero
What do you do when you, a basic underling, manage to kill the hero before his big showdown with your boss? Find out in Underhero by Paper Castle Games, a quirky 2D platformer following the adventures of the magical hilt Elizabeth the IV and the little Masked Kid, as they travel the world to restore Elizabeth’s long lost power, so they can defeat the tyrannical Mr. Stitches and save the world once and for all!
as part of the spotlight, Neoshadowzac played through a segment of the currently available demo to get an impression of the game. here`s Neoshadowzac’s thoughts on Underhero:
from the segment of the demo I played, I could see some strong ideas for the story, raising interesting conundrums about how life works when your literally the faceless underling for the big bad evil guy (called Mr.Stitches here) and what that means when the cycle of hero saving the princess gets interrupted. While I didn’t get far enough in to see how the story would fully develop, I’m interested to see where the plot threads lead into on the sweater of the story, as it manages to make any RPG railroading feel natural, due to your character’s meek demeanour. While I would’ve like to see some of the other minions get some more flavour, it does hammer in that they’re generic mooks.
The controls were extremely solid, featuring the staple platforming controls. What peaked my interest the most was the combat system, featuring a unique semi-turn based battle structure. While I could ignore the enemy tells and just spam the attack button, I would find myself in desperate need of healing items. It can be kind of tricky to figure out the best time to attack, as the game does reward well timed hits, but once in the rhythm I found myself slaughtering snake-people with ease. I have no doubt that once more options are unlocked later into the game, that this battle mechanic can become rather engrossing, as the multiple ways to approach the fight make tangible differences. Whether throwing money at the problem to make it go away or hack and slashing with your talking sword, there’s always a way out of the problem.
